      Ion 2 headlight review

        Comments:

The Ion 2 headlight could be an excellent daylight attention grabber with it's high flash rate and bright wide beam. Very hard to miss in traffic. However the battery contacts are unreliable. It often fails at some point during a ride. A few taps and it comes on again. Obviously a connection problem which I have been unable to resolve and not for lack of trying. Other cyclists report the same issue with the Ion 2. Had zero support on the issue so bottom line is a complete fail for reliability.

Bought this from my LBS (The Bike Lane rocks!) with my Trek 7.5FX in 2011. Lasted three years with several sets of AAA batteries. Decent life for each set. Great mounting bracket. Easy to remove to avoid theft. Used extensively on a 20-mile round trip commute to work. But when it died, I tried to get a new bulb but none was available. Had to replace the light. Bracket does wear out (stretches and loses grip on handle bars). That part can be replaced but not the bulb.

        Comments:

I would recommend this light set for people who are looking for a good front and rear light set for the quality and price. the front light has a steady light post that i find easy to put on my hybrid street bike and has a handy quick release to use when i need a flashlight to change a tire or whatever i might need it for at the time. the front light has a good battery life and fits how it is described in the description. As for the rear light it has a belt clip which i don't exactly find useful it could use a seat post mount with the removability as the front light post mount the battery life is exceptional and is something i find good about the light it is very viable and really hard to miss on a 100%-40% battery life (same going for the front light) this light set is the first out of litterally 20 different front and rear light sets i have tried in the 12 years i have been riding, dont get me wrong there are much better light sets but if your willing to pay top dollar which in this economy people are trying to save but by all means the choice is on you. this concludes my though on this fairly priced, good quality product and i hoped this helped out who ever is needing an honest opinion on this not much to really say about it but it being a good starter light set.

        Post Sandy Blackout tested

        By ChrisM

        About Me Avid Cyclist

        Comments:

My LBS was open during the Post Sandy Blackout and it was getting dark so I needed a good headlight if I was going to continue riding in southern Manhattan, where there were no street lights and no traffic lights. They sold me the ION 2 and it was awesome. It lit up the road in front of me, as well as made me very visible. The mount for the headlight is a nice soft rubber handlebar wrap that easily comes off, and if you want to leave the mount on the bike, it also has a quick release.I use 3 AAA rechargeable batteries. The batteries it came with did not last very long and the light was dim in a few weeks. But I hope my rechargeables last longer. There are few inexpensive lights that are both bright enough and cast a beam. This does both. Next step up is a Magicshine. But with this you get brightness and no separate battery pack, which is convenient for a commuter like me.The tail light has a tight clip made of metal. Like a really strong paper clip, it attaches to my bike bag's light strap and does not let go. Most cheap plastic clips are not tight and fall over so I cannot wear them on my messenger bag.The light set came with multiple mounts, so you should find one you like.

        Comments:

I typically only use these on my 1.5 hr commute into work on a road bike in the morning. After approximately 10 commutes, the Ion 2 headlight started to dim more and more each time I jarred it with a bump in the road (like other online reviews have stated); replaced the batteries and it seems to be working flawlessly again. Battery life could use some improvement. The Flare 3 tailight is the better piece of the set. I always set it to strobe mode, and have never had any problems with vehicles being too close, or it seeming like they didn't see me. The taillight is well worth your money spent if you ride early morning or night and enjoy feeling safe.

I've been using it in strobe mode, front and rear, and, Ive got at least 40 hours out of the original batteries so far, no end in sight. Taken off the bike, it's a great, small flashlight, I can light up objects over 100' away to the point, I can see detail, and color.
