Hudson Valley Tour: Route Details

The start:

The tour officially starts on Tuesday night with an evening group social at the Chelsea shop. Come meet your fellow riders and ask any last-minute questions.

Day 1:

Wednesday morning, we depart from Chelsea and pedal along the Hudson River to the George Washington Bridge. Our first day takes us up to Bear Mountain via the Palisades, Tallman State Park, Piermont, Nyack, and the Hook Mountain State Park. We’ll stay at the Overlook lodge with sweeping views of the valley.

Day 2:

Thursday we'll ride through the quaint town of Cold Spring, and then into Poughkeepsie. (Tip: consider stopping at the Culinary Institute of America’s bakery or at Rossi’s Deli.) After a visit to the FDR National Historic Site we'll continue on to Rhinebeck. We'll stay at the historic (1776) Beekman Arms & Delamater Inn and enjoy a delicious evening meal together in Rhinebeck.

Day 3:

Friday will be a leisurely day (approximately 37 miles). We’ll pedal over the Hudson River on a converted railroad bridge through New York State’s newest park, officially called Walkway Over the Hudson State Historical Park. Riders looking to add miles can ride on the Hudson River Rail Trail on the west side of the park or the Dutchess County Rail Trail on the east side. Be sure to work up an appetite because Friday night's dinner is at the Culinary Institute of America.

Day 4:

Saturday morning will take us back over the Walkway (we have to do it twice – it's that nice!) and then south over Storm King Mountain towards West Point Military Academy. Along the way we'll stop at the home of a fairly famous general named George. Also on the agenda is usually a stop at the taproom of the Newburgh Brewing Company. Saturday is about 33 miles in total – getting to West Point early gives us enough time to take a guided tour of our nation’s oldest military academy.

Day 5:

Our last day of riding is Sunday. Riders will have the option of shuttling to Nyack to get a jump on the hundreds of Sunday morning cyclists who frequent this town’s cafés and bakeries, or leaving directly from West Point and pedaling south. We’ll head back along the Palisades for one more view of NYC from the GW Bridge before crossing back into Manhattan.Travelers are welcome to drop off their bikes at the Chelsea store. Locals can bike straight home and enjoy complementary luggage drop-off within the five boroughs.

Mid-April temperatures range from the high 30s to the low 60s. We’ll keep you updated about clothing and gear suggestions as we get closer to the tour dates. Come join our dedicated staff on a springtime escape!
